About Alison
From A to ‘I do’
I'm Alison Byam — an independent wedding and naming celebrant based in Essex, working in English, German, Italian and Spanish. Here's the longer story about who I am and why I do this.
Why I became a celebrant
I noticed the ceremony was always the bit people forgot to plan
Everyone spends months on the flowers, the food, the playlist. Then the ceremony — the actual reason everyone's there — gets the same old template script and perfunctory readings. I'd been to enough weddings where the couple's own personalities and actual love story barely got a mention, and I kept thinking: I could do this better!
What inspires me
Seeing two people standing in a room filled with people they love
There's just no better feeling than looking round a room and everyone there being someone you love. A wedding day is just that — a gathering and celebration of all kinds of love, romantic of course, but friendship and familial ties too — and it deserves to be special.
My love of storytelling
Every couple already has the story — I just finesse it
Nobody knows your love story better than you. I spend a couple of hours with you, ask a lot of nosy questions, and then go away and shape what you've told me into something that reads out loud the way you actually sound, that your guests will love.
What couples say makes me different
"So many people told us afterwards how genuine it felt"
The thing couples mention most often afterwards isn't the words themselves — it's that guests kept saying the ceremony "actually sounded like them." That's the whole aim. Not a boring template, not clever writing for its own sake, just an accurate, warm, occasionally funny account of two specific people and their true love story.
One practical note
So you know me when I arrive
I have a port wine stain birthmark on my left arm — it's just part of how I look, and I mention it here only so it's not a surprise or a distraction on the day itself. If you spot a woman with a white folder and a birthmark on her left arm heading your way, that's me, and I'm exactly where I'm meant to be.
Qualifications & experience
The official bit
- Natively fluent in English, I studied Italian and German at university, before going on to complete a Master's degree in Translation and Professional Language Skills — during which I also studied Spanish
A few fun facts
Beyond the ceremonies
Languages
English, German, Italian and Spanish — university studies enabled me to spend time living in Austria and Italy. I've been to weddings all over the world; it's my favourite reason to travel!
Theatre & film
If I'm not working at a wedding, you'll probably find me at the theatre, dissecting a script and obsessing over word choices. I do love a well-told story! Otherwise I'm tucked up on the sofa watching the latest movie releases.
Reading
My love of love stories started with Jane Austen and has recently developed into more of a romantasy obsession! A Court of Weddings and Naming Ceremonies, anyone?
Favourite wedding moment
At my own wedding, our niece loudly announced to my brand-new husband that his speech was "really boring, Uncle James" and promptly ran outside to play. Fair play, kid — I didn't help him write it.
