Questions couples ask most
If your question isn't here, it's not a silly one — just get in touch and ask.
A celebrant writes and leads a personal ceremony — a wedding, naming, vow renewal or similar — that isn't tied to a religious or civil script. As an independent celebrant, I'm not employed by the register office or a particular faith, so the ceremony I create is built entirely around you: your story, your values, your sense of humour.
No — and this is an important one. A celebrant-led ceremony in England and Wales isn't legally binding on its own. You'll need a short separate legal appointment (usually at a register office, or a registered venue) to make your marriage official. Most couples do this quietly beforehand with a couple of witnesses, then have the ceremony that actually matters to their guests — the one I write and lead — on the day itself. I'll talk you through the timing on your discovery call.
As far as you need me to. I'm based in Essex and cover local ceremonies as standard; for weddings and naming ceremonies further afield, I'm very happy to travel — any reasonable travel expenses are covered by you as the client and agreed in advance, so there's never a surprise cost.
Yes, absolutely — with exactly the same care, warmth and attention as any other ceremony. Inclusive language and representation matter to me throughout, not just as an option you have to ask for.
Yes, please! Children can take part as readers, ring-bearers, or simply be mentioned and included in the ceremony itself. Furry family members are welcome too!
Yes — parents, grandparents, siblings and close friends can all have a role, whether that's a reading, a blessing, walking someone down the aisle, or simply being named and thanked properly in the script.
Absolutely, I encourage it. Some couples want to write every word themselves, some want a starting point to work from, and some would rather I write vows in their voice after our conversations. Whatever works for you.
We get wet! In all seriousness, if your ceremony is outdoors it's worth having a wet-weather plan with your venue, and I'll always work with whatever that plan is — undercover, indoors, or a shorter version if needed. Very little puts a ceremony off course.
Don't worry — you're not really speaking to a room, you're speaking to each other, and I'll structure the ceremony to make that as natural as possible. Most nerves disappear within the first minute, once you realise everyone there is simply delighted to see you.
£595 per ceremony for the day, covering the consultation, a fully bespoke script, unlimited edits, a rehearsal or run-through, and Alison leading your ceremony on the day. See the Pricing page for further details, or get in touch to chat about bespoke optional extras.
As soon as you have a date in mind. Availability is limited and popular dates — particularly Saturdays in peak season — sell out well in advance, so it's worth an early conversation even if your planning is otherwise just beginning.
